The Open University of Catalonia launched the idea of the virtual service. Sun Microsystems fully coincided with this virtual concept and supported this idea through its strategy of Java Computing and Portal Base Computing. The scalability of the Sun Microsystems systems and its leading position on the Internet has been considered key factors for the development of this widely covering concept. The combination of the latest technologies available in data transmission, personal computers and multimedia, together with a solid teaching model and continuous evaluation have enabled the Open University of Catalonia Virtual Campus to become the standard platform preferred by those institutions that are interested in delivering services of remote education and remote learning.
