This paper categorizes SLM into seven functions. The paper defines the concept of SLA monitoring in the network management layer. The most important factor in SLA monitoring is the mapping between QoS parameters and network performance metrics (NPMs). The paper also defines the concept of this mapping and the requirements of an SLA monitoring system. From this concept, the paper presents a generic SLA monitoring system architecture.
