In the best tradition of 21st century companies, it's hard for a layperson to understand exactly what Rockwell Automation does. The factories that buy Rockwell's machines and software need to do a lot of training to keep users' skills current. For that reason, Rockwell has been in the customer-training business longer than most people have owned computers. Today, the responsibility for customer training lies squarely in the hands of the global manufacturing solutions (GMS) business unit. GMS sells courses on using and maintaining Rockwell-built controls and power transmission products; programming that equipment to work in customers' plants; and connecting computer networks to automation software and machinery.
