In 1996, Nissan Diesel implemented SAP R/3 on another vendor's UNIX servers, based on ADABAS relational database. This replaced legacy systems, in part to speed processing and in part to tackle the Year 2000 date issue. These SAP systems managed human resources and financial accounting for Nissan Diesel. Maintenance costs of the system were gradually rising over time, and performance was unsatisfactory: the monthly payroll calculations were taking up to eight hours to produce. After researching the options, Nissan Diesel chose to move to the IBM " xSeries x440 system for its SAP systems, in order to lower costs and gain the benefits of high performance computing.
