Founded in 1909, Woolworths is one of the UK's leading retailers, with more than 800 stores across the country. Offering entertainment products, home wares, children's toys and clothing, and confectionery, the Woolworths stores operate multiple formats to meet customer needs. With retail operations going from strength to strength, Woolworths needed to build a robust, responsive IT infrastructure that could be expanded cost-effectively and at low risk. The ongoing systems migration program will see existing individual business applications replaced by an integrated ERP system, SAP for Retail. Given the volumes of data involved, Woolworths needed to find a cost-effective, scalable hardware infrastructure. Having made the strategic decision to move core systems over to SAP, Woolworths faced the challenge of creating a cost-effective platform for the solution. The company's experience of IBM AS/400 and IBM DB2 Universal Database made IBM eServer iSeries the ideal candidate.
