The Windows Driver Foundation (WDF) defines a new model for developing device drivers for the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. This paper provides an introduction to how drivers implement Plug and Play and Power Management features using the kernel-mode driver framework that is part of WDF. The major goal of the WDF is to make it dramatically easier for developers to create high quality device drivers for the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. Another important goal is to allow developers the freedom necessary to support the unique features of their devices without introducing unnecessary constraints.
