Siemens Shanghai Mobile Communications Ltd. (SSMC) was founded in May 1993 for the Chinese mobile radio market. The joint venture of Siemens mobile (60 percent share) and other Chinese partners develops, manufactures and sells mobile radio infrastructure and mobile phones. SSMC and China Unicom began their collaboration in April 1994. In the following years, SSMC installed and optimised a complete GSM network for China Unicom in several stages. In June 1999, SSMC was awarded a contract worth EUR 10 million to set up a prepaid service for China Unicom in the cities Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The basic provision of GSM for China Unicom has been concluded in all 31 Provinces. In future, attention will be focused on expanding and supplementing the existing mobile radio networks. This involves introducing new services based on GPRS and the next, third generation of mobile radio (3G).
