Until July 2003, Mercer Human Resource Consulting relied on older versions of software to support its users. The organisation was concerned about the amount of time its IT department spent rebuilding desktop and laptop machines that crashed. In addition, the users themselves were keen to demonstrate to clients that Mercer was at the forefront of technology. In response, Mercer chose to implement Microsoft Windows XP operating system and the Microsoft Office XP applications suite, which not only provide a secure and stable technology for users, but also form an ideal foundation for new, innovative solutions such as mobile technology. Mercer hopes to roll out 250 Windows Mobile?based Pocket PCs to consultants by the end of 2004. The organisation has already seen significant productivity improvements since implementation, including IT time-savings of more than 37 hours a month and a 13 per cent reduction in helpdesk callouts.
