3rd Generation type services are exhibiting new characteristics that are far removed from their predecessors, leading to new and challenging ways to account for their usage. The high level of interaction and rich user experience offered by many of these services places a real-time requirement on the supporting delivery and accounting systems. A 30 or 45 day billing cycle will not support the demands of such services. Instead, an alternative mindset is needed when considering the application of accounting principles to this new evolution of services. This white paper presents a reusable solution to the challenges of billing for 3G IP based services by leveraging existing standards for usage data capture, messaging, mediation and transformation.
