Auto-ID technology offers a wide variety of potential applications at many levels in the supply chain. Many authors have written about the vast possibilities brought by this revolutionary technology, which goes from simple process improvement applications to radical innovations effecting entire business models. Nevertheless, the real impact of the implementation of most Auto-ID applications is sometimes underestimated, undervalued or simply disregarded. In particular, the impact of Auto-ID applications on existing information systems has not been researched in great detail, although it is believed to be important. This paper proposes using a structured approach to identify major changes required by Auto-ID implementations in operational procedures and their supporting information systems.
