Vodacom is South Africa's leading cellular phone provider with 61 percent of the country's market. It has in excess of 5,000 base stations providing coverage to more than 60 percent of South Africa, ensuring coverage of the urban areas and most of the rural population. As growth in the use of cellular telecommunications for voice communications slows, service provider companies are seeking new revenue streams by developing and offering data products and services to mobile phone users. As with all new ideas, much pioneering work needs to be done to initiate and investigate their market acceptance and financial viability. At the same time, cellular service providers have invested considerably in upgrading the infrastructure to offer the latest General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), the underlying technology that facilitates mobile data communications, and need to start generating revenues to get a return on this investment. In April 2002, Accenture - with a wealth of expertise in the mobile data arena to call on - was approached by Vodacom to help develop its Mobile Data Solutions initiative and give it a leading edge over its competitors, breaking new ground in the South African market.
