In January 2000, BT Cellnet and BT Genie launched the UK's first fully operational, commercially available WAP services, announcing sales of £1.5m just over a year later. BT Cellnet launched the UK's first GPRS commercial service for corporations in June 2000, and made the first live 3G call in March 2001. It also offers international coverage in 126 countries over 285 networks around the globe. Having already ventured successfully into WAP, the next two years will see BT Cellnet's continuing rollout of GPRS, followed by fully developed 3G offerings. To capitalize on the opportunities these new services afford, the company identified the upgrading of its billing infrastructure as a key initial step on the road to future success.
