Aitana SBS was using IBM AS/400 systems to support traditional green-screen hosted services, while new GUI (Graphical User Interface)-based applications built using Lotus Domino, IBM WebSphere and Java were hosted on servers running Microsoft Windows servers. The company found that its Windows systems were not able to scale effectively, and that customers were increasingly unwilling to pay for new server licences and were asking about Linux alternatives as a cost-saving route. Equally, some customers were looking to update applications and were evaluating alternatives to the green-screen approach. To meet the need for both legacy support and GUI applications, Aitana chose IBM eServer iSeries servers and IBM eServer xSeries servers.
