In 2000, Reed Elsevier embarked on an ambitious project to design and implement a cohesive information technology (IT) infrastructure that would unify its far-flung operations and achieve faster time-to-market, reduced operating costs and improved security and communications. The Microsoft Windows 2003 project encompasses more than 37,000 employees, 3,000 HP ProLiant servers and 41,000 HP desktops. A team consisting of Reed Elsevier, HP Services and Microsoft technical specialists and managers has developed comprehensive plans and documentation for migrating the company to Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Active Directory, Exchange Server 2000/2003 and Microsoft Windows XP Professional on the desktop. Reed Elsevier has been pilot testing with a beta version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003, and plans to roll out the production version of the operating system this year and next. The goal is to migrate at least 70 percent of the organization to the new software by the end of 2004, with the remainder to be incorporated in 2005.
