This paper explains different approaches of server consolidation. The IT industry often defines server consolidation as running many different types of applications, such as e-mail, financial, database, and file-serving applications, on a single, large server. This broad definition has evolved, however, to encompass other approaches to consolidation, which can be divided into four categories: logical, physical, workload, and application.
