The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is enjoying a range of performance improvements and cost benefits since deploying the operating system and database that it uses to host the PeopleSoft human resource management system application, which is used in supporting nearly 73,000 current and retired employees in 10 of its agencies. The USDA's Internet Combined Administration Management System (I*CAMS), which serves the 10 agencies, upgraded to the Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server operating system from Windows 2000 Advanced Server, on a 32-way Unisys ES7000 server. The USDA migrated its PeopleSoft database to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 from Oracle 8i after testing found that SQL Server provided better performance. Within the year, the USDA plans to upgrade the operating system to Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition.
