Fisheries and Oceans Canada conducts annual Snow Crab surveys along the St. Lawrence Estuary in Quebec. During the two-week voyage, surveyors measure as many as 20,000 crabs in order to determine the status of the snow crab biomass. Before using handhelds to collect data, surveyors used paper forms, a task made difficult by windy conditions aboard the trawler. After the survey had been completed, it would take three weeks to retype the data into a database. Jean-Paul Dallaire, a scientist in the Invertebrates and Experimental Biology Division, developed Pendragon Forms applications for crab data collection. Researchers now enter location, species, sex, and measurements of each crab into a handheld form. Branching has been built-into the form to streamline the data collection process, and the data is synchronized to a laptop several times each day.
