Faced with the need to increase file-serving storage capacity to meet growing demand, the company could add more Windows file servers with direct-attached storage (DAS) or centralize online storage on a network device. Jefferson Pilot Financial recognized that continued reliance on a DAS infrastructure involved significant disadvantages, including a high cost per megabyte, inefficient storage utilization, unsatisfactory reliability of Windows-based servers, and growing staff requirements to support the proliferation of servers. After evaluating storage options - including DAS, SAN, and NAS - Jefferson Pilot Financial concluded that a network-attached storage solution from Network Appliance could best address its storage consolidation requirements. NetApp helps streamline their storage infrastructure by supporting secure file sharing for UNIX and NT networks. The ability to increase storage capacity on-the-fly is also a huge advantage, as is having a solution based entirely on the highly stable and reliable NetApp Data ONTAP operating system.
