Cadence uses powerful UNIX computer modeling to evaluate and test its semiconductor designs on measures such as physical size, speed of operation, and signal integrity. Running these tests can take up to five days of continuous processing, making it absolutely vital that the system running the test - including the system’s data storage component - be extremely reliable. To enhance the cost-efficiency of its chip-design operations, Cadence created “collaboration chambers” for its Virtual CAD group. These chambers enable Cadence engineers to collaborate in real time with customer engineers at remote locations. To simplify the environment, the North American IT Operations group elected to standardize on storage vendors and selected Network Appliance as a preferred vendor.
