As in any large, global enterprise, many Novell employees work outside the corporate office in smaller branch offices. These employees need secure reliable access to information from any location, at any time. Novell was spending a significant amount of its IT budget for servers, routers, dedicated wide area network (WAN) connections and VPNs to provide branch office users with secure authentication, file access, printing capability, and data backup. Novell began an Internet Office project to consolidate network services at its branch offices to a few key data centers and decrease its dependence on expensive dedicated WAN links and slow VPNs. Novell engineers developed Nterprise Branch Office, a software appliance that intelligently consolidates branch office infrastructure.
