Consider the BlackBerry Enterprise Server as a conduit rather than a mail server or message repository, all message storage is still left to the Microsoft Exchange Server. By maintaining a link to the messages in the user’s Microsoft Exchange mailbox, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server provides many advanced features.
