This paper reviews the history of the SIM, the changing way in which it is being used to support mobile Internet terminals, and the network and security roles that have been mandated for 3G/UMTS networks in the form of a USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module). It goes on to examine the way the USIM's SIM ToolKit is likely to be used for competitive advantage in the mobile Internet and 3G markets, providing an insight into brand differentiation strategies that could help an operator succeed in the early stages.
