This white paper introduces web-server monitoring, explaining its importance and describing various monitoring concepts and types. A set of common web-server problems will be enumerated, along with methods of monitoring to detect and/or prevent these conditions. Finally, automated monitoring systems will be discussed, along with two of their primary advantages - immediate notification of problems and the gathering of historical data. Although the focus of this chapter is on web-server monitoring, the concepts generalize for other types of internet servers, including mail, news, ftp and Application servers.
