In 1971, the Pennsylvania General Assembly created "intermediate units" in the state's school districts to help equalize educational opportunities for all students in the commonwealth. By offering a variety of services to groups of school districts that can share resources, these intermediate units help schools meet their education and technical needs cost-effectively. The Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 (CLIU 21) is one such unit. CLIU 21 manages the resources of 14 school districts, two vocational technical schools, and other area schools on an as-needed basis. To accommodate the schools' growing data, CLIU 21 needed to upgrade its servers and consolidate its storage infrastructure. In addition, CLIU 21 needed a flexible storage solution that could support its Microsoft Windows, Novell NetWare, and Red Hat Linux operating systems. By optimizing storage and consolidating servers, CLIU 21 could provide schools with even more affordable ways to bring the most recent learning technologies into classrooms. CLIU 21 deployed a SAN based on the DellEMC CX400 RAID array, a Dell PowerVault 132T tape backup system, and a combination of Intel Pentium III processor-based Dell PowerEdge 1650 servers and Intel Xeon processor-based PowerEdge 2650 servers running Microsoft Windows 2000, Novell NetWare, and Red Hat Linux 8.0 operating systems. The result- A high-performance, space-saving storage Infrastructure, on-the-fly storage scalability, and faster backup for CLIU 21.
