With Linux on S/390 and zSeries becoming a viable option, it is tempting to move workloads from UNIX platforms to the mainframe, where centralized management, and scalability promise important cost benefits. There is a general consensus that Linux on an IBM mainframe can lower the total cost of computing, few actual case studies included in this paper provide solid proof. CA used a real world production environment, and defined a clear methodology for cross-platform benchmarking. Their results show that Linux on S/390 is a competitive solution.
