Centra Health is a regional, not-for-profit health care system located in the heart of Central Virginia. Centra Health faced a challenge that is pervasive in the healthcare industry the need to accurately track the maintenance of complex hospital equipment. Centra Health became an early adopter of mobile handheld technology when it implemented a custom solution using Palm handhelds, back in 1998. The handheld synchronization scheme allows Palm handhelds to be connected to strategically located PCs without the need or expense of a dedicated PC for each handheld device. Tens of thousands of transactions have been successfully processed using the Handheld Work Order application developed by Palm Solutions Provider, Sussex. Centra Health has achieved significant improvements over the paper-based system of the past, and today, efficiently tracks the maintenance of vital life-saving equipment that its communities rely on.
