Portals initially started out as initiatives for managing and distributing knowledge to audiences internal to the organization. The term has since evolved to represent literally any interactive Web application that aggregates information and business processes for one or multiple audiences, internal or external. Organizations have seen portals proliferate throughout, at the workgroup and the corporate level and everywhere in between. This has introduced a number of opportunities, and some unique challenges, for organizations and their IT staffs.
