This white paper outlines the corporate portal industry's first comprehensive framework for evaluating the costs and benefits of a portal deployment to employee, partner and customer audiences. The paper finds that application integration and content management are the major costs in a portal deployment. The major benefits are massive cost synergies for developing and delivering Web services to broad audiences, lower technology training costs, lower intranet publishing and administration costs, increased productivity and employee self-service. The paper also briefly discusses benefits for which it is difficult to quantify the portal's contribution, such as increased revenues through delivery of better sales tools, better customer service, or improved execution on an acquisition through a portal that combines resources from both company's systems. For organizations that have already deployed a portal, this paper can highlight ways to maximize the return on that deployment.
