VMware is a virtual-machine platform that provides an abstraction of x86 PC hardware so that multiple operating systems can run unmodified and at the same time on a standard PC. For developers, this means you can run multiple development environments on your desktop without rebooting or repartitioning. For users, VMware makes it possible to run Windows applications with Linux. VMware comes in two flavors, depending on the operating system running on the user’s Pentium-based (or compatible) PC -- VMware for Linux, and VMware for Windows NT/2000.
