Frances Baard District Municipality (FBDM), in the Northern Cape, had no real IT infrastructure in place, with the exception of an unreliable local area network (LAN) and a UNIX server running a financial application. All users only had local printers attached directly to their desktop PCs, while all faxes were sent and received manually. FBDM furthermore had a poorly managed security setup and very little anti-virus protection on the server platform. In order to satisfy their immediate business objectives and simultaneously provide FBDM with state-of-the-art technology, reliability and overall compatibility, the whole network was moved onto the latest Microsoft technology.
