Once, traditional Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) Virtual PrivateNetworks (VPNs) were the only option. Now, a new kind of VPN — SSL VPNs, based on the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)protocol that secures the world of e-commerce — has emerged asthe leading solution for remote access and extranet VPNs. Andincreasingly, for reasons that are explained in this paper, SSLVPNs are replacing IPSec VPNs for remote access, leaving IPSecVPNs for their original purpose—site-to-site VPNs.
This paper provides an overview of the differences between SSLVPNs and IPSec VPNs, and explains why SSL VPNs areultimately a better choice for secure remote access and extranets.
