With this level of executive support, Hartwick's IT staff began revamping its five-year-old network in 1999. The outdated FDDI dual-ring backbone, with its multiple bridges and hubs, spread 100Mbit and shared 10BaseT across the 30-building campus to 1,400 students and 460 faculty and staff. Hartwick College chose a Campus Area Network (CAN) with a gigabit core and switch meshing in high-density areas for redundancy and fault tolerance. Hartwick used existing fiber cable throughout the campus to connect an HP ProCurve Routing Switch 6308M-SX at the center with 62 HP ProCurve Switch 4000Ms in the academic buildings, and 18 HP ProCurve Switch 2424Ms in the residence halls.
