Komatsu America International Company is the North American sales arm of Komatsu Ltd., a producer of heavy road construction and mining equipment headquartered in Japan. Komatsu's intranet was facing a growing storage problem as its business expanded rapidly. Relying on a growing number of direct-attached storage (DAS) devices meant inefficient use of its storage resources, a reliance on low-end storage systems, and costly management. Komatsu implemented an IP storage network solution by installing two Cisco SN 5420 storage routers using Internet Small Computer Systems Interface (iSCSI) technology over a Gigabit Ethernet infrastructure. The Cisco SN 5420s are connected over redundant Fibre Channel connections to an IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server 2105 subsystem. Komatsu gained a highly available and cost-efficient storage solution that could be scaled at reasonable cost. By centralizing storage, it improved the utilization ratio of its storage, decreased management time and costs, and gained a flexible IP-based platform that has enabled wider access to the storage.
