With its silicon-based solution, Application Switching has the potential to revolutionize the service provider and enterprise networking marketplaces. There’s a trend going on here, and we’ve seen it before. When switching technology evolved from relying entirely on protocol independent bridges to hardware-based Layer 2 switches, which move to silicon yielded tremendous gains in performance, reductions in price, and the ability to implement new features that were too processor-intensive for practical use on a processor based system.
