At a time when other ministries in Germany were building new structures that employed state-of-the-art technology, the German Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMA), located in Bonn, Germany, was faced with the challenge of updating its existing network, which barely handled the present volume of data traffic. The BMA found that productivity was decreasing because employees were enduring long waits on overloaded networks. Because of budgetary limitations and concerns about the disruption of daily business operations, the BMA required an innovative solution. This solution needed to work with the ministry’s existing Ethernet network, and it had to be cost-effective, reliable, and scalable. Using an ATM solution from Marconi, the BMA has enhanced its existing network to provide better performance, greater flexibility, increased capacity, and reduced congestion. ATM, or asynchronous transfer mode, is a networking technology that links a wide range of devices from telephones to computers, integrating voice, video, and data services over one common infrastructure that encompasses both local and wide area networks.
