As broadband data services and access services become more Ethernet-centric, there is a growing need for an access control mechanism that is optimized for Ethernet and has the flexibility and extensibility to be applicable both within the enterprise and at the edge of service provider networks.
IEEE 802.1x is a relatively new standard created expressly to meet the growing need for authentication of Ethernet-attached devices and subscribers. As Ethernet continues to assume the role as the universal access technology, 802.1x will go a long way toward delivering the vision of a single, simple solution for authentication that allows subscribers to make secure connections to all kinds of network services.
