This paper provides background information on the historical approach to monitoring UNIX servers. It describes the related changes to AppManager, and the addition of AppManager UNIX agents and explains how AppManager can be used to manage the most popular UNIX servers, in addition to Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP servers.
Traditionally, UNIX server management has taken an approach derived from ad-hoc scripting in response to specific management needs. AppManager provides a much more cost-effective and
accurate system for managing UNIX servers. But more significant for today’s multiplatform environments is AppManager’s ability to manage UNIX servers and Windows servers and workstations from the same management console. The sections below describe
the additions made to AppManager that support UNIX systems and briefly outline how users would go about managing UNIX servers with AppManager.
