What is FICON? It's a data transmission protocol, based on the ANSI standard Fibre Channel System (FC-SB-2). The same standard is used by many open systems server and storage vendors and is supported on Wintel, UNIX and Linux architectures, in addition to IBM’s S/390 and zArchitecture systems. It is a layered protocol, separating the distinct elements of the architecture, and offers three basic advantages over earlier ESCON technology -- significantly higher performance, greater distance while maintaining throughput and simplified configuration management, including the ability to connect suitably configured storage devices to heterogeneous servers via the FICON or FCP protocols.
