High availability is a critical component of any enterprise solution today. The ability to maintain continuous operations without DBMS failures, hangs, and data corruption should be a paramount consideration when selecting a DBMS vendor. The reality is that Real Application Clusters (RAC) only helps with instance failures and does not cover a large range of other availability issues – problems that can cause an enterprise to experience significant downtime or data loss. This paper examines the capability of both IBM and Oracle to offer a true high availability solution, recover in the event of an instance failure.
