During the past decade, the evolution of data networks has established the Internet and corporate Intranets as essential communication tools for residential and business customers alike. The Web has pushed intelligence into the network in the form of nodes (companies or organizations that own the nodes) that constitute the network. The network itself, however, is not yet intelligent. Providing simple connectivity requires only that it look at incoming IP packets, find out the source and destination information and send packets to their destinations through a calculated path.
