After a brief review of recent proposals for using small superconductors, whose charging energy Ec is comparable to their superconducting gap ?, as physical qubits in quantum computation, we analyse the 'Cooper pair box' experiments of Nakamura, Pashkin and Tsai. In these, the gate voltage on a small superconducting island, the 'box,' is perturbed by a pulse of height 8V and duration ?t and coherent oscillations between the charge states with n and n + 1 Coopers pairs are detected. We have studied the effects of noise in 8V and ?t on their measurements and found that the two kinds of noise have qualitatively different signature in the experimental data.
