The RADIUS protocol has been widely and successfully deployed to provide AAA services for remote PPP/IP access. Inherent shortcomings of RADIUS have limited its ability to adapt to the expanding set of desired AAA services. The new Diameter protocol has been designed to overcome RADIUS shortcomings in the areas of roaming operations, NAS requirements, Mobile IP, and wireless packet data services. This paper provides an introduction to how Diameter works and describes what sets it apart from RADIUS.
