The growth of the World Wide Web has given businesses the ability to inexpensively distribute electronic documents to an international audience. Web documents have become larger and more complex. As companies prepare for electronic commerce initiatives, they face the task of integrating their applications, data, interfaces, and processes with other companies. A challenge for business application developers is to tie together data generated by applications from different vendors and different application domains. Through the use of an Extensible Markup Language (XML), applications can interchange data without having to manage and interpret proprietary or incompatible data formats.
