Management Information System is the most talked and most misunderstood term in corporate circles. Since information is inevitable for corporate decisions, MIS is indispensable in business management, whether corporate identifies it or not. Traditionally, Management Information Systems provide compiled information to management based on data collected from different sources. Business entities like Banks working in a dispersed environment with Branch offices spread across the nation, data collection is the prime and most difficult part in implementing an efficient MIS. This paper attempts to analyze the problems in such an environment especially Banking sector and suggests a way to implement successful MIS in the e-way. The data collected at Zonal Office or Regional Office level where it is consolidated and transmitted to Head Office for Bank level consolidation and reporting. Because of the time delay involved, the information become just a post-mortem and banking use it mostly for CIS (Compliance Information System) for statutory purposes. In Indian public sector banks, the evolution of MIS has taken place through three distinct phases.
