With hardware constantly racing ahead another axiom has proven true: “Software will always expand to use all existing resources and push the envelope even further.” As software drives hardware needs, developers are pushed to produce more in less time, to make fewer mistakes, to do it right the first time. Managers are forced to make tough decisions, as trade-offs must be made between development cost, development time, product features and quality. New development paradigms, new lifecycle models, new languages, new environments, new tools and utilities, client/server technology, object oriented technology, more stringent quality standards, standards enforcement, porting of applications, web-aware applications... soon these will be changing too.
