IP was deployed in the front-end of the network, the portion that connects users and desktop PCs with application servers. IP was used because popular technologies such as the web and e-mail were beginning to account for a majority of network traffic.
Fiber Channel, on the other hand, was deployed in back-end networks, the private segment of the network used only by servers for interconnection with each other and with common storage systems. FC was important because it provided native support for block-level reads and writes to disks, and because it had high-speed interface support that handled up to 100 MByte/sec.
