The dramatic, ongoing increase in data and storage requirements has led to the rapid development of new data storage technologies. Storage area networks (SANs), in particular, can provide a wealth of benefits for today’s data-driven businesses. First and foremost, SANs centralize a company’s storage, which dramatically eases the storage administrative burden. So it isn’t hard to see why many companies are interested in integrating this valuable technology into their information technology (IT) environments.
Why then are some companies hesitating to deploy SAN technology? One of the most common concerns among system administrators involves interoperability. Problems with interoperability can crop up among competing transport protocols, physical media, devices from different vendors that use the same technology, and current technologies and their legacy predecessors.
