Standard JSP and servlet components are deployed and run from within a Web container, commonly found within low-end application servers. These application servers are intended for low-volume interactions that require minimal systems management and administration. The scalability of these implementations is usually measured in terms of pages served per minute and is limited to supporting hundreds of concurrent users (rather than thousands). In fact, early performance benchmark tests that were focused on measuring JSP and servlet performance rated these low-end application servers highly, but these marks merely represent the limited range and scope of the tests.
