With all the debate about the cost-benefits of Voice Over IP, and whether or not Next Generation Networks (NGNs) will displace the Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTNs), we have lost sight of the basic question we should be asking ourselves. Is the basic question "Do we need NGNs?" Or is it "Do we need Next Generation services?"
From a user’s perspective, today’s networks have come a long way in fulfilling their purpose of enabling people and their machines to communicate at a distance. We have made great progress over the decades, though we have accepted substantial limitations and restrictions along the way and added significant complexity in the way users access and manage their communications services. We are rapidly reaching the point at which service providers will no longer be able to introduce another advanced service or technology into the marketplace.
