Outsourcing IT held the promise for management that IT services would be delivered better and cheaper than was possible using an in-house IT department. After an initial flurry of IT outsourcing in the late 1980s and ‘90s, the rush to outsource has largely stabilised and outsourcing is now merely one of business’ standard tools for managing the delivery of IT function. This paper examines the results of IT outsourcing and how the results compare to the promises.
